In 1881 cartographer/surveyor George N. Colby, assisted by J.H. Stuart and others, published the first atlas of Washington County towns, villages, plantations and timber lots, binding 87 individually engraved maps into one convenient volume. It was fully subscribed, sold out, and out of print by 1882.

The Atlas of the State of Maine included statistics and descriptions of its history, educational system, geology, rail roads, natural resources, summer resorts and manufacturing interests.
